I. 第１回日本地震工学研究発表・討論会、盛会裏に終了

同会（プログラムの詳細は　http://convention.jaee.gr.jp 参照）は、平成１３年１１月２８日から３日間にわたり、日本学術会議において開催され、一般会員３８６名、学生会員７３名、非会員９４名、合計５５３名の予想を上回る参加があった。日本地震工学会会長の岡田恒男先生、日本学術会議の中村恒善先生、トルコのギュルカン教授、台湾のロー教授、米国のスペンサー教授から、地震工学の進展と・未来の課題や、最近の地震被害と復旧過程などについての、興味深い特別講演があった。海外からの３名の講演者は、それぞれの国の地震工学の代表者からの日本地震工学会に対する心暖まるメッセイジを持参して、開会式において紹介した。

また、最近のトピックスを含んだ３６分野にわたるオーガナイズドセッションおよび３日間ににわたるポスターセッションで、約３２０件の個人発表と活発な討論があった。従来の縦割り学会にはない融合した発表・討論と、最近の幅広い課題を網羅したセッション構成でよい勉強になった（朝日新聞泊記者談）とのコメントもあった。

一方、懇親会も予定を上回る９９名の参加者を得て、和やかに行われた。今後は日本地震工学会を会員各自の第２の我が家と考えて活動してほしい（岡田会長談）との要請もあった。同大会の詳細については、次号のニュースレターで紹介の予定である。梗概集の購入（会員７千円、非会員９千円）を希望の方は、学会事務局(FAX 03-3457-7076)まで申し込んで下さい。

また、同会は日本地震工学会としての初めての試みであり、多数の方のご協力を頂いたが、種々不行き届きの点はquestion@convention.jaee.gr.jpまで連絡頂ければ、次回以降の参考にする予定である。（実行委員会委員長　家村浩和）

BSSA Special Issue: "Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake of 20 September 1999"

The Seismological Society of America (SSA) is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 91, Number 5, October 2001, a Dedicated Issue on the Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake of 20 September, edited by Ta-liang Teng, Yi-Ben Tsai, and William H. K. Lee, Guest Editors.

This issue consists of 507 pages and an attached CD-ROM, the first simultaneously paper and CD-ROM publication by the SSA. It contains a preface by the guest editors, 37 peer-reviewed papers on a wide range of research on the Chi-Chi earthquake, including geological, geodetic, seismological, and earthquake engineeringstudies. It also contains 16 short notes introducing the data files archived on CD-ROM, including (1) digital strong-motion records of the main shock from about 500 accelerographs at the free-field sites operated by the Central Weather Bureau, Academia Sinica, and National Central University, (2) all the broadband waveform data recorded in Taiwan of the main shock and 115 aftershocks, (3) the strong-motion data from a 32-channel array in a damaged building, with a maximum acceleration of up to about 0.7g, and (4) annual lists and maps of Taiwan earthquakes from year 1991 through 2000.

Because extensive seismological and geodetic instrumentations were implemented in Taiwan beginning in 1991, the Chi-Chi earthquake (Mw=7.6) is by far the best observed major earthquake in the world, especially in the near field. This earthquake caused a confirmed death toll of 2489, and an estimated property loss of about US $4 billion. The archived data on the CD-ROM will be very useful to anyone who is interested in studying this earthquake.
